What to look for when checking the head
-any distortion ( capture succeedaneum and cefalohematoma)
-bruising
-circumference
Caput succedaneum
Swelling all over head due to fluid buildup
Cefalohematoma
Collection of blood under the periosteum of a skull bone
What can cause bruising?
-pressure from delivery
-manually breaking waters
-fetul scalp electrode
How do u measure circumference and what is the normal circumference?
Using occipitofrontal circumference
33-35.5cm
What to look for when looking at the face?
-symmetry
-position of facial features in relation to each other
What to look for when looking at the eyes?
-assess shape, size
-round pupils
-any discharge
What to look for when looking at the nose
-nostrils shouldn’t flare.. indicates breathing problems
What to look for when examining the mouth
-symmetry
-intactness of the palate
-length of frenulum
What to look for when examining the ears?
-cartilage to allow ears to spring back
-low set may imply chromosomal abnormality
-any skin tags should be noted
What to look for when examining neck
-baby should be able to move their head from side to side
-extra fold implies Down’s syndrome
What to look for in clavicles
-no fractures
What to look for in arms
-same length
-move freely
-number of fingers, any webbing
-no. palm creases (should be 3)
What to look for when examining the chest
-symmetry of stomach and chest during respiration
-nipples should be well formed and symmetrical
What to examine when looking at the abdomen
-abdomen should be rounded
-synchronised with chest during respiration
-umbilical cord should be clamped properly to avoid bleeding
