-changes baby’s microbiome
- associated with higher intelligence
What do transfer factors do?
Help with absorption
What do growth factors do?
Protects gut against infection
What do the enzymes do?
Aids digestion
What do oligosaccharides do?
Lines the gut, preventing bacteria from entering
What do bifidus factors do?
Reduces pH of gut making it more acidic
Kills more bacteria
What does lactoferrin do?
Helps body absorb iron reducing constipation
What does IgA do?
Protects baby from environmental bacteria and mothers past illnesses
What do white blood cells do?
Destroy bacteria

Cell repair
Positioning for breastfeeding:
-close
-head free
-in line ( head, spine and feet all in line)
-nose to nipple
How to hand express:
-massage breast and nipple (areola) to release oxytocin
-using a C shaped hand, compress in a steady rhythm
- continue expressing until milk flow ceases
How to store EBM
-Fridge for 8 days at 2-4 degrees
- in hospital fridge, 24-48 hours
- freezer 6 months
Cleaning equipment:
- hand washing
- washing all equipment in soapy water
- use a bottle brush and rinse in clean water
