Neo-Marxism + Crime Flashcards
Neo-Marxism - Radixal Criminology - Taylor, Walton + Young
• Crime is caused by external factors
- Labelling, bio + social factors
• Voluntaristic approach
- have free will
- wc don’t commit crime for economic reasons - commit to change soc
Neo-Marxism - Fully Social Theory of Deviance - Taylor, Walton + Young - Hall + Mugging
• Example - Hall - Mugging
1) Wider origin of act –> deviant act in context (Economic crisis)
2) Immediate origin of act –> context indiv commits crime (Being kicked out)
3) The act itself –> Mugging became crime due to TV influence (called theft)
4) Immediate response–> Reactions of those around deviant (media create moral panic of mugging)
5) Wider response –> (Parliament pass laws to cover economic crisis)
6) Effect of Labelling–> on future + amplification (young black men labelled muggers = sfp = career)
Neo-Marxism - Evaluation of radical Criminology
• Radical Criminology is idealistic
- see wc criminals as Robin Hood character (hero) rebelling against capitalism
