A
- Churches we’re safe places for campaigners
- Teachings like ‘love thy neighbour’ were useful in helping to justify racial equality
- Church was well respected so eventually ‘white’ churches were supporting the change too

A
- Religion has a DUEL CHARACTER; it does act as a conservative force but can also change the status quo
- Through socialisation, R/C are able to maintain HEGEMONY (dominant set of ideas seen as common sense)
- Suggested religion can have RELATIVE AUTONOMY; some independence from R/C, potential for COUNTER-HEGEMONY
- Religious leaders can take role of ORGANIC INTELLECTUALS; leading social change

- Agreed religion has relative autonomy from R/C.
- Claimed church provides guidance for the oppressed.
- LIBERATION THEOLOGY is a movement in Catholicism committed to help the poor
- Oscar Romero is an example of an organic intellectual not working hand in hand with the state

What are the criticisms of Neo Marxism
A
Their view of religion can be outdated as still believe religion is socially significant.
However this is a EUROCENTRIC position, ignoring prominence of religion in parts of the world
