Neil Keddie- Lecture 5 Nucleophilic Substitution 4 Flashcards
1
Q
What makes a good nucleophile?
A
Complex many factors
+ Anions that are conjugate bases of weak acids
+ Lower down the periodic table (LUMO and HOMO closer in energy)
These effects do not always match
2
Q
What solvent favours SN1 substitution?
A
Polar protic solvent eg water or ethanol
3
Q
What solvent favours SN2 substitution?
A
Polar aprotic solvents eg acetone
