What is a Need? What are the 2 Types?
an unsatisfactory internal condition that motivates behaviour.
2 types:
Biological needs: essential for body to run properly. primary.(food, water, air, sex, pain avoidance)
Psychological needs: required to feel good emotionally. May stem from bio needs. Secondary. (intimacy, self esteem)

What are motives?
cognitions (thoughts) with effective overtones, organized around preferred experiences and goals. (ex. The feeling of hunger motivates us to satisfy our need for food)
What is a press?
An external stimulus which increases or decreases the level of a motive. (ex. good looking sandwich can be a press for hunger motive)
What are dispositional motives?
Motives that we have a naturally high or low level of, vary from person to person. (ex. high or low sex drive)
What is apperception?
he projecting of a motive onto an ambiguous external stimulus via imagery
What is the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT)? What are its 3 steps?
a test that assesses the strength of a motive through narrative fantasy. Most dominant needs and motives should appear. 3 basic steps:
1. Asked to create a story from ambiguous pictures shown to them
2. Describe what’s happening (thoughts, feelings, relationships)
3. Story told should reflect needs and motives
What is Inhibited power motivation?
the condition of having more need for power than for affiliation but restraining its use
