Freud Flashcards
Psychic determinsim
nothing is random, free will is an illusion bc all of our choices are affected by external forces.
Psychodynamic
set of processes always in motion which causes influence on behaviour. Id and superego always exerting influence. Causes conflict which must be dealt with through defence mechanisms.
Freud’s Topographical Mind
Conscious, Preconscious, Unconscious
Freud’s structural model of personality
3 components: Id,ego, superego
all work in tandem to create personality
Id
original, primitive part. Source of all energy. Instinctual, animalistic. Immediate gratification.
- Primary process: imagination of desired object. Can momentarily satisfy impulse. -Creates feelings of wish fulfilment.
Follows pleasure principle.
Ego
rational part. Deals pragmatically with reality. Controls energy of id.
Follows reality principle: actions must take into account constraints of reality. Self control.
Marshmallow test uses secondary process: hold off id desires until the right moment. Doesn’t care about morality
Superego
part that seeks moral perfection. Last to develop. Prevent id impulses rather than eliminate them
2 parts: ego ideal and conscience
Ego ideal
represents perfection and rewards for good behaviour. Perfect example to which we aspire. Pride.
Conscience
punishes violations of moral standards. Guilt. Concerned with morality, not rationality
