    outer aspect of upper arms
    anterior aspect of the thighs
    abdomen:
    1” away from umbilicus
    1” away from iliac crest
    1” away from symphysis pubis

  2. remove needle cap
  3. hold skin to the side about 1”
  4. hold syringe like a dart between thumb & index finger of dominant hand
  5. insert needle 90 degree angle while maintaing traction
17
Q

Last 5 steps of Z-track

A
  1. aspirate by pulling back on plunger
  2. inject medicine slowly
  3. waint 10 sec after injecting medicine before withdrawing needle
  4. withdraw needle & allow skin to slide over injection track
  5. apply pressure to the site with alcohol swab; do not massage
18
Q

First 5 steps of IV prep

A

1 calculate correct rate

  1. chect solution for color, clarity & exp date
  2. time tape the IV by putting adhesive tape along the side of the volume markings
  3. put tape at top of IV with date/time, pt’s name, room #, hourly rate of fusion
  4. hang IV container of IV pole
19
Q

6 middle steps of IV prep

A
  1. remove tubing from package & straighten, maintaining aseptic technique
  2. slide roller clamp up until it’s just below the drip chamber, close roller clamp
  3. insert tubing spike into IV bag
  4. squreeze/release drip chamber until 1/3 full
  5. prime tubing, inverting Y-injectionports, removing air bubbles once primed
  6. turn roller clamp to off position
20
Q

Last 8 steps of IV prep

A
  1. write date, time & intials on piece of tape; secure tape to IV tubing just below drip chamber
  2. check pt ID band
  3. put on clean gloves
  4. swab end of saline lock with alcohol swab for 15-30 sec
  5. connect IV to hub of saline lock
  6. open the roller clamp on IV tubing, adjust to perscribed infusion rate
  7. secure a loop of IV tubing to pt’s arm with tape
  8. remove gloves
21
Q

First 6 steps of IV piggyback

A
  1. calculate the correct rate
  2. check the solution for color, clarity & exp date
  3. check pt ID band
  4. hang bag on IV pole
  5. remove tubing from package & straighten, maintaining aseptic technique; close roller clamp
  6. insert tubing spike into IV bag
22
Q

Last 5 steps of IV piggyback

A
  1. prime tubing, allowing only a drop or two to be lost
  2. swab the Y-injection port for 15-30 sec above the mainline IV clamp
  3. lower mainline IV on extension hook
  4. open roller clamp on IVPB to wide open position
  5. set mainline roller clamp to IVPB calculated rate by counting drops in IVPB chamber
