Need To Know Flashcards
Reasons why we abide the law
Attachment- the bond we have have with our family stops us from committing crime as we don’t want to lose the trust they have in us
Eg if a loved one found out you stole from them
Commitment- even if you’re tempted youre none deviant path might prevent you protecting the bond steal money to protect loved ones
Omalade
Beliefs- society’s values know what is right and wrong and if done wrong will be isolated by society
For example bad language is seen as deviant in society/
Involvement- if you have a productive life you are less likely to commit crime won’t have time for it
Eg if you have a job/ family
Evaluate the effectiveness of the police
A strength of the police is official statistics including recorded crime and solved crime, this shows there is a decrease in crime. For example in England and Wales there was a 27% decrease in crime than the previous year. Therefore police is effective as it is preventing crime.
A strength of police is the counter terrorism work, this means they have been able to prevent terrorist attacks. For example the police foiled 12 Islamic plots since 2017. Therefore police is effective and they are fulfilling there role to protect and prevent crime.
A weakness of police is crimes not investigated can be seen as unsolved, this means police don’t investigate every crime. For example they drop serious crime such as rape as it takes 129 days to solve when theft only takes 2 days. Therefore police isn’t effective as they are not protecting the public.
Evaluate the effectiveness of probation
A strength of probation is that it acts as a deterrent, this means that it can exclude the offender from places and make curfews. For example 36% re offender after probation however 60% reoffend when they have a prison sentence. This is effective as it is preventing crime.
A weakness of probation is that they are not necessarily doing there job, this means the offender won’t be able to rehabilitation. For example in 2016 HM 1/98 got a mentor when they were on probation. Not working effectively.
A weakness of probation is that it is not a effective deterrent, this means that offender may not turn up. For example 3 no shows per offender every 6 months. Not effective behaviour won’t be able to change
