Q

How to determine severity of malocclusion

A
  • Spatial displacement
    1. Amt of spatial displacement between maxilla and mandible from ideal relationship
    2. Amt of spatial displacement between maxillary teeth and mandibular teeth from ideal relationship
    3. Amt of spatial displacement of teeth from ideal position within dental arch
    4. Number of teeth involved in spatial displacement
    5. Sites of teeth displaced
    6. Amount of crowding/spacing
    7. Arch form degree of distortion/asymmetry relative to ideal arch

Q

How to determine difficulty of orthodontic treatment

A
  1. Amount of movement needed for maxilla and mandible to attain ideal relationship (inter jaw relationship)
  2. Amount of movement needed for maxillary and mandibular teeth to attain ideal occlusal relationship
  3. Amount of movement needed for teeth to move into ideal position within the dental arch
  4. Direction of movement eg AP only, AP + vertical
  5. Amount of space available within dental arch and alveolar bone for teeth to move into ideal position eg interdental spaces existing within arches easier

Q

What does each part of envelope of discrepancy represent

A
  • Inner circle represents limits of orthodontic tooth movement
  • Middle circle represents limits of tooth movement with orthodontic tooth movement + functional appliance
  • Outer circle represents limits of tooth movement with orthodontic tooth movement + orthognathic surgery

Q

Which orthodontic tooth movement is the most difficult

A

Intrusion: Periodontal ligament cannot be overcompressed to ensure that blood can still flow at apical aspect of PDL for resorptive processes (reorganisation necessary for tooth to move apically)
