craniofacial growth Flashcards
What are the three factors to consider in evaluating somatic growth
- Timing and duration
- Physiologic indicators
- Vertebral maturation
Onset of growth, PHV, end of growth for female and males
Female: 10, 12, 17
Male: 12, 14, 19
physiologic indicators for female and male and what do they signify
- Female: menarcheMenarche occurs 12 months after PHV. Peak already over and growth is decelerating, but there is still growth potential
- Male: voice changeIf voice change has begun, the boy is IN pubertal growth spurt. Male voice means that growth rate has begun to decelerate
when is the ideal treatment period for growth modification
Ideal treatment period is late accelerative to PHV to mid decelerative phase
Compare features of forward vs backward mandibular growth rotation
- Condyle inclination
Forward: forward/vertical Backward: backward
- Curvature of mandibular canalForward: GreaterBackward: Less
- Mandibular border shapeForward: ConvexBackward: Antegonial notch
- SymphysisForward: Forward symphysis, prominent chinBackward: Backward symphysis, weak chin
- Interincisal angleForward: ObtuseBackward: Acute
- LAFHForward: DecreasedBackward: Increased
Define DAC
Dentoalveolar compensation is a physiologic mechanism by which development of dental and alveolar arches are controlled to secure occlusion and adaptation to basal parts of the jaw. This helps to maintain normal arch relationship with varying jaw relationships
What are the factors affecting DAC
- Healthy eruptive system for continuous eruption of teeth during growth
- Forces acting on teeth by soft tissues
What is the mechanism of DAC
Vertical discrepancy
- Increased LAFH: mand and max incisors retrocline
- Decreased LAFH: mand and max incisors procline
Sagittal discrepancy
- class II max incisors retrocline, mand incisors procline
- class III max incisors procline, mand incisors retrocline
Transverse discrepancy
- narrow maxillary and wide mandibular base: buccal tilting of upper teeth and alveolar arches, lingual tilting of lower teeth and alveolar arches
