Necrosis - Pathology Boards Flashcards
necrosis
localized death of cells through injury or disease
coagulative necrosis
heart attack allows the walls of the heart to stay strong to heal the necrotic tissue
Liquefactive necrosis
CNS, completely digests the cells, transforming them into a liquid viscous mass
Cassesous necrosis
TB & Syphilis, granulomatous reactions, looks like cheese or curds.
Gummatous Necrosis
ONLY with Syphilis
Zenker’s Necrosis
severe glassy or waxy necrosis of skeletal muscle in acute INFECTIOUS disease (typhoid fever)
Fat Necrosis
formation of small quantities of calcium soaps when fat is hydrolyzed into glycerol and fatty acids (PANCREAS)
Fibroid necrosis
occurs in the walls of the blood vessels when endothelial and smooth muscle cells are injured and dying (ASCHOFF’S NODES in heart muscle)
Gangrene
coagulative necrosis
Noxious products of anaerobic bacterial metabolism
Dry gangrene
coagulation is sustained
wet gangrene
phagocytic cells break down the necrotic debris and produce some liquefaction (polyarteritis nodosa)
