What is a necropsy?
A post-mortem examination or an autopsy performed in an animal
What is the purpose of a necropsy?
Find what made the animal sick/what killed the animal, trying to possibly prevent or treat what is causing the animal to be sick or die in the remainder of the flock/herd.
How sever should you leg a disease problem become before deciding to contact the veterinarian for a necropsy?
5-10% above normal morbidity levels, 1-2% above normal mortality levels
What animals should be selected for necropsy?
- Animals that have been dead for less than 24 hours,
- animals that are early on in the course of disease, representative symptoms, untreated
What are the acceptable and preferred forms of livestock euthanasia?
CO2 chamber, electrocution, gunshot, blunt force trauma, captive bolt, lethal injection
What are the first steps in a necropsy?
VCPR (veterinary client patient relationship) and conduct an external evaluation of the animal
- animal history
- external evaluation
- internal evaluation
List the organ/systems evaluated in a necropsy
Snout, heart, lungs, liver, sleep, kidneys, joints, GI tract, lymph nodes
What are fresh tissue samples used for?
Culturing viruses or bacteria
What are fixed tissue samples used for?
Histopathology (in formaldehyde)
When should tissue samples be submitted?
Not on Friday (early in the week, mon-thurs)

What is a slaughter check? What I’d the advantage?
Inspection of multiple carcasses at slaughter for signs of disease (vet does it at packing plant).
Advantage: look at more animals quickly, get can make quick assessment of all diseases and you don’t lose the value of your carcasses
