Disinfectants and Disinfection Flashcards
Define sterile
Free of all living organisms, especially microorganisms
Define disinfect
Removal of most living organisms
What is a disinfectant and why to we need it?
Any agent that kills or inhibits the growth of microorganisms. More livestock are being raised in confinement facilities which leads to pathogen accumulation.
What does sanitation/disinfection do?
Interrupts the spread or transmission of the disease and “breaks the disease cycle”
What is the first step in sanitation?
Removal of organic matter
List 5 characteristics of a good disinfectant
- Broad spectrum of activity, coral vs static
- Economical
- Not destructive to material/tissues
- No residual activity
- Effective when diluted
How do disinfectant kill microorganisms?
- Oxidation
- Dehydration
- Coagulation
- Chemical Reactions
What are the classes of chemical disinfectants?
Phenols, Halogens, Formals, Quaternary Ammonium Compounds, Alcohols
Example of a phenol
Pine oil
What does a phenol coefficient measure?
The ability of the disinfectant to kill typhoid fever organisms
Example of a halogen
Iodine
Chlorine
Example of a formol
Formaldehyde
Example of quaternary amines
Ammonia
Example of alcohol
Ethanol
Isopropanol
List 3 non-chemical disinfectants
Mechanical- brushing, scrubbing, water under pressure removes dirt (organic matter)
Sunlight- ultra-violet rays- surface disinfectant
Heat- stream
