Insertion: Mastoid Process
Function: Flexes head, lateral flexion of the head, rotates head
Scalenus anterior and medius
Origin: Cervical vertebrae
Insertion: First rib
Function: Elevate rib, lateral flexion and rotation of the head.
Spinalis
Part of Erector Spinae Group
Origin: Cervical and Thoracic vertebrae
Insertion: Cervical and Thoracic vertebrae above
Function: Extend and laterally flex spine
Longissimus
Part of Erector Spinae Gorup
Origin: Cervical, Thoracic & Lumbar vertebrae
Insertion: Mastoid process, cervical & thoracic vertebrae
Function: Extend and laterally flex spine and head.
Iliocostalis
Part of Erector Spinae Gorup
Origin: Sacrum, lumbar vertebrae and ribs
Insertion: Ribs and cervical vertebrae
Function: Extend and laterally flex spine
Intercostals
Origin: Inferior aspect of ribs
Insertion: Superior aspect of ribs
Function: Elevate and depress ribs to breathe
Diaphragm
Origin: Sternum, ribs & lumbar vertebrae
Insertion: Central tendon
Function: Increases thoracic cavity volume drawing in air while breathing.
Rectus Abdominis
Origin: Pubic crest and symphysis pubis
Insertion: Xiphoid process and inferior ribs
Function: Flexes trunk and aids in expiration, defecation and child birth
External Oblique
Origin: Lower 8 ribs
Insertion: Iliac crest and pubis
Function: Flexes, laterally flexes and rotates trunk. Aids in forced expiration.
