Neck Pain Flashcards
Where is neck pain felt? Describe the boundaries and subdivisions of the neck
Neck pain is pain felt in an area on the posterior neck bounded superiorly by the superior nuchal line, inferiorly by an imaginary line through T1 and laterally by the Sagital planes tangential to the lateral borders of the neck
The neck is further subdivided into upper and lower neck pain with an imaginary line through c4 and suboccipital pain felt between the SNL and imaginary line through C2
Why are there problems with diagnosing neck pain
Because:
1: Diagnoses wrongly assume homogeneity between sufferers of neck pain.
2: diagnoses are often murky like LBP
3: Msk Dx tend to be based on identifying a discrete structure known to be the source of pain.
What is the anterior part of the neck referred to as?
The throat
What is the difference between radiculopathy and radicular pain?
In radiculopathy a patient will suffer a neurological deficit due to compression of a spine nerve.
In radicular pain a patient will suffer pain that refers due to compression of the dorsal root ganglion
Describe where the upper cervicals can refer pain to
Pain can refer to the occiput, frontal and orbital areas.
Where can the lower cervicals refer pain to
The scapula region , shoulder and anterior chest wall.
Where does inter spinous muscles refer to?
Pain is perceived in the upper limb
Where would the Z joints of c2-c3 produce pain?
Subocciptal area
Why is the validity of somatic dysfunction diagnoses questionable?
Because TART is used to diagnose it and it is highly subjective, and it has poor inter and intra examiner reliability
