Neck Fascia and Triangles of the Neck (work in progress) Flashcards
What are the boundaries of the Posterior Triangle of the Neck?
- Anterior, Posterior, Inferior, Roof, and Floor
Ant - Sternocleidomastoid Post - Trapezius muscle Inf - Clavicle Roof - Skin, superficial fascia with platysma and deep investing fascia Floor - Prevetebral fascia and muscles
(Muscles: Splenius capitius, levator scapulae, and posterior, middle, and anterior scalenes)
What muscles lie in the Posterior Triangle of the Neck?
Splenius capitius, levator scapulae, and posterior, middle, and anterior scalenes
What key muscle forms the subdivisions of the Posterior Triangle of the neck?
The omohyoid muscle
(The inferior belly of the omohyoid form the Occipital triangle (superior) and the Supraclavicular triangle (inferior)).
What are the boundaries of the Anterior Triangle of the Neck?
Ant - Midline of face Post - Sternocleidomastoid Superior - Inferior border of mandible Roof - skin, superficial fascia with platysma muscle and deep investing fascia Floor - pharynx, larynx, and thyroid
What are the subdivisions of the Anterior Triangle of the Neck?
Submental triangle
Submandibular triangle
Carotid triangle
Muscular triangle
(Key muscles: omohyoid and digastric)
What comprises the Superficial cervical fascia of the neck?
Subcutaneous tissue and platysma muscle
What are the four subdivisions of the Deep fascia of the neck?
Investing fascia
Pretrachial fascia
Cartoid sheath
Prevetebral fascia
Describe the Investing fascia of the neck
- Envelopes the entire neck (like a sock)
- Splits to envelope Trapezius and Sternocleidomastoid
- Superiorly encapsulates parotid and submandibular glands
Describe the Pretrachial fascia
- Contains the Thyroid gland, Trachea, and Esophagus
- Does not envelope muscles
- Continuous with buccopharyngeal fascia superiorly and descends to mediasteinum (“a free ride to the heart”)
Describe the Prevetebral fascia
Envelopes vertebrate and muscles
What structures lie within the carotid sheath?
Vagus nerve
Common carotid
Internal jugular
What are the boundaries of the Root of the Neck?
Laterally: 1st pair of ribs and cartilages
Anterior: Manubrium of sternum
Posterior: Body of T1 vertebrae
