  1. observe it whilst the patient takes a sip of water
    - thyroid masses and thyroglossal cysts will rise
  2. observe it whilst the patient protrudes their tongue
    - a thyroglossal cysts will rise and thyroid masses will not

  1. submandibular and submental
  2. tonsillar and parotid
  3. pre auricular and post auricular

A
  1. feel for symmetrical elevation of the thyroid glad as the patient swallows some water
  2. ask patient to protrude their tongue whilst you palpate the midline mass
    - a thyroglossal cyst will ride
