Neck Flashcards
Origin of Sternocleidomastoid
Sternal Head- Anterior surface of Manubrium of Sternum
Clavicular Head- Superior surface of medial third of Clavicle
What are the muscles of the cutaneous and superficial muscles of neck
Platysma
Sternocleidomastoid
Insertion of Sternocleidomastoid
Lateral surface of the Mastoid Process of Temporal bone and Lateral half of Superior Nuchal Line
Innervation of Sternocleidomastoid
Spinal Accessory Nerve- CN XI (motor)
C2 and C3 nerves (pain and proprioception)
Actions of Sternocleidomastoid
Unilateral Contraction- Tilts head to same side (laterally flexes the neck) and rotates it so face is turned superiorly toward opposite side
Bilateral Contraction- Extends Neck at Atlanto-occipital joints, Flexes Cervical Vertebrae so that Chin approaches Manubrium, or Extends superior Cervical Vertebrae while Flexing Inferior Vertebrae so Chin is trust forward with head kept level
With Cervical Vertebrae fixed, may elevate Manubrium and medial end of Clavicles, assisting pump-handle action of deep respiration
Four main regions of the Neck
SCM region
Posterior Cervical region
Lateral Cervical region
Anterior Cervical region
SCM muscle divides neck into which regions
Anterior and Lateral Cervical Regions
Muscles in the Lateral Cervical Region (Contents)
Splenius Capitis
Levator Scapulae
Middle Scalene
Posterior Scalene
Floor of the Lateral Cervical Region
Prevertebral Fascia, overlays four muscles
Nerves of Lateral Cervical Region
Spinal Accessory Nerve Roots of Brachial Plexus Suprascapular Nerve Cervical Plexus Cutaneous branches of the Cervical Plexus- Nerve point of the neck Lesser Occipital Nerve Great Auricular Nerve- C2 Transverse Cervical Nerve- C2 and C3 Supraclavicular Nerves- C2 and C3 Phrenic Nerves- C3 C4 C5- Diaphragm Accessory Phrenic Nerve- C5
Veins in the Lateral Cervical Region
External Jugular Vein
Subclavian Vein
Brachiocephalic Vein
Arteries in Lateral Cervical Region
Cervicodorsal Trunk (transverse cervical artery)
Suprascapular Artery
Occipital Artery
Third part of the Subclavian Artery
Origin of Anterior Scalene
Anterior tubercles of Transverse processes of C3 to C6 vertebrae
Insertion of Anterior Scalene
1st Rib
Innervation of Anterior Scalene
Cervical Spinal Nerve C4 C5 C6
Actions of Anterior Scalene
Flexes Neck Laterally
Elevates 1st Rib during forced inspiration
Origin of Middle Scalene
Posterior tubercles of Transverse processes of C4 to C7
Insertion of Middle Scalene
Superior surface of 1st Rib; posterior to groove for Subclavian artery
Innervation of Middle Scalene
Anterior Rami of Cervical Spinal Nerves
Actions of Middle Scalene
Flexes Neck laterally
Elevates 1st Rib during forced Inspiration
Origin of Posterior Scalene
Posterior Tubercles of Transverse processes of C4 to C6
Insertion of Posterior Scalene
External border of 2nd Rib
Innervation of Posterior Scalene
Anterior Rami of Cervical Spinal Nerves C7 and C8
Actions of Posterior Scalene
Flexes Neck Laterally
Elevates 2nd Rib during forced inspiration
