Acetaminophen/Tylenol
“Analgesic” NOT anti-inflammatory
Indication: mild pain and fever
MoA: COX inhibitor (irreversibly binds), enhances 5HT release, regulates body temp by acting at hypothalamus, PG synthetase inhibition
Adverse Rxn: hepatotoxicity (>4g/day), nephropathy
Acetazolamide/Diamox
“Carbonic Anhydrase Inhibitor”
Indication: Acute Angle Closure Glaucoma, CME (RP, mechanical),
MoA: carbonic anhydrase inhibitor, decreases aqueous production
Adverse Rxn: metallic taste, paraesthesias hands/feet, metabolic acidosis, thrombocytopenia, agranulocytosis, aplastic anemia
Contraindication: sulfa allergies and COPD
Acetylcysteine
“mucolytic”
Indication: filamentary keratopathy, acetaminophen overdose, and cough (cystic fibrosis and COPD)
MoA: pro-drug, replenishes Glutathione, brkdwn disulfide bonds in protein to destroy mucus
Adverse Rxn: allergy, rash, fever, vomiting
Acyclovir/Zovirax (oral/IV)
“anti-viral”
Indication: hsv, chicken pox, shingles, to prevent CMV, and infections d/t Epstein-Barr
MoA: DNA polymerase inhibitor
Adverse Rxn: nausea, diarrhea, kidney issues, and low platelets
Albuterol/ProAir HFA
“beta-2 agonist”
Indication: Asthma, bronchospasm, COPD (short acting)
MoA: selectively stimulates beta-2 receptors relaxing airway smooth muscle
Adverse Rxn: cough, dizziness, h/a; HTN, angina, MI, arrhythmia
Allopurinol/Zyloprim
Indication: Gout and kidney stones
MoA: xanthine oxidase inhibitor
Adverse Rxn: cataracts and steven johnson (sulfonamides)
Amantadine/symmetrel
Indication: Parkinson’s and influenza
MoA: potentiates CNS dopaminergic responses
Adverse Rxn: blurry vision and oculogyric crisis
Amiodarone/Cordarone "class III antiarrhythmic"
Indication: arrhythmias, CHF
MoA: prolongs action potential phase 3, blocks K+ channels
Adverse Rxn: whorl keratopathy (reversible), NAION (optic neuritis), anterior subcapsular deposits
Amitriptyline/Elavil
“Tricyclic antidepressant”
Indication: Depression, Migraine h/a
MoA: inhibits norepinephrine and serotonin reuptake
Adverse Rxn: dry eye, dry mouth, tachycardia, mydriasis
Amoxicillin/Principen
“broad spectrum antibiotic - penicillin”
Indication: bacterial infections, otitis media
MoA: bactericidal; inhibits (transpeptidase) cell wall mucopeptide synthesis
Adverse Rxn: hypersensitivity type 1, possible type 4 rxns sjs, contact dermatitis, and birth control doesn’t work
Amphotericin B/Amphocin
“Anti fungal”
Indication: life threatening fungal infections - aspergillosis, cryptococcosis, blastomycosis, systemic candidiasis, coccidioido-mycosis, histoplasmosis, zygomycosis/mucormycosis
MOA: binds to cell membrane sterols, increasing permeability
Adverse Rxns:
Apraclonidine
“Sympathomimetic”
Indication: prophylaxis postoperative IOP increase, glaucoma, Horner’s Diagnosis
MoA: alpha2 agonist, stimulates receptors
Rxn: corneal erosion, keratitis, arrhythmia, asthma, conjunctivitis
Atenolol/Tenormin
“Anti hypertensive”
Indication: HTN, angina, post-MI, migraine
MoA: Beta1 receptor antagonist, beta blocker
Adverse Rxn: bradycardia, Raynaud’s, T2DM; taper slowly
Atorvastatin/Lipitor
“Statin”
Indication: hypercholesterolemia
MoA: inhibits HMG-CoA reductive
Adverse Rxn: photosensitivity, SJS
Azathioprine/Imuran
“Immunosuppressant”
Indication: Rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s, ulcerative colitis
MoA: prodrug for mercaptopurine, inhibits DNA synthesis
Adverse Rxn: chronic immunosuppression
