What was the Enabling Act?
The Enabling Act was an Act proposed by Hitler that allowed him to pass laws without the consent of parliament

The Enabling Act was proposed by Hitler in the new Reichstag on the 24th March 1933 for the Reichstag to vote on
What did the Enabling Act give Hitler the power to do?
The Enabling Act gave Hitler the power to make laws without the consent of the Reichstag (parliament) Legally making him Dictator of Germany
Why is the Enabling Act considered legal?
This is because the Enabling Act was voted through by the Reichstag
Why was the Reichstag vote taken under threatening circumstances?
-Communists were (legally) banned from voting due to the Reichstag Fire
-Social Democratics absent due to fear
-Nazis intimidated members of the Reichstag who didn’t turn up to vote
-a SA mob chanted threatening Slogans outside

Democratic rule in Germany
What were the Länder?
Local government in Germany were split into regions called Länder
What did the Länder do?
Elect its own assembly to manage a local issue
Why did the the Nazi’s want to control the Länder?
They thought they had too much power
What did the 1934 Act of the Reconstruction of State do?
Got rid of the Länder and divided Germany into 32 regions
Each region was run by a Nazi Gauleiters who took orders from government
What were the consequences of The 1934 Act of Reconstruction of the State?
Have the government and Hitler more power through legal means
What was the People’s Court?
The people’s Court= a separate court outside the normal Justice System
When was the Act to set up the People’s Court passed?
In April 1934 Hitler passed the Act to set up the People’s Court
What did the People’s Courts deal with?
‘Political offences’= vague term ranging from slow workers to treason plotters
What was the result of the People’s court?
The number of death penalties significantly rose over the next years

Added all the presidents powers to those he already had as chancellor becoming Führer of Germany

He forced every soldier to swear an oath of loyalty to him
When was Hitler officially voted by the public to be Führer of Germany?
19th of August Hitler was voted Führer of Germany through legal means
Overall how did Hitler gain total power through legal means?
By gradually dismantling democracy, removing opposition and through legislation

Increase in social prosecution
