In terms of other agreements why was this a surprise?
Because it went against the Anti-Comintern Pact of 1937 with Japan and Italy. This was against communism. USSR was a communist country.
Why was the Nazi Soviet Pact important
Hitlers attack on Poland was inevitable, as USSR and Germany agreed to split Poland.
What was the main purpose of this pact
That Germany and the USSR agreed not to interfere with each other when/if war broke out.
What were the effects of this pact
If Britain really did want to defend Poland then war was inevitable.

Britain and France had lost a potential ally
Why was this agreement a surprise?
Because fascism and communism do not work well. Hitler made his views on communism very clear in ‘Mein Campf’ for example.
