Why Abyssinia as a country?
It was not owned by a country already. As well as this, it was because it was located on the border with other Italian owned countries belonging to their empire, making it very easy to invade so they could immediately secure their exports.
Why did Mussolini think he was going to get away with it?
Because the Manchurian Crisis gave him he impression that nothing would he done to stop his actions.
What was the Stresa Front? When was it signed?
It was signed in 1935 by Italy, France and Britain. It was an agreement in which they all agreed to oppose Germany and hitlers actions in changing the treaty of Versailles.

That Britain still believed in the League of Nations as means of keeping peace.

Because the league did take action as they were morally condemned.
Why weren’t Italy’s punishments more severe?
There was limited sanctions as neither Britain or France wanted to lose Italy to Hitler even more, they needed Italy’s support. France still provided iron and steel. USA still provided Oil. The move to keep sanctions limited was to both keep peace but also to make sure the countries themselves didn’t suffer from the sanctions they would put in place

It unofficially left in May 1936, sanctions were withdrawn in July. It officially left in 1937

Firstly, it distracted the league so that he could remilitarise the Rhineland without the league fully paying attention to it.
Secondly, it enabled Italy to sign the Rome-Berlin Axis with hitler, Italy was now on Germany’s side.

1914 is when they left the Triple Alliance. They went to the Allies side, although they weren’t given as much as they were promised in 1915.
