Q

Who was Ernst Rohm?

A

A German military officer and a leading member of the Nazi Party. Initially a close friend and early ally of Adolf Hitler, Röhm was the co-founder and leader of the Sturmabteilung (SA), the Nazi Party’s original paramilitary wing, which played a significant role in Adolf Hitler’s rise to power.

Interesting note: Rohm was openly homosexual, which Hitler seemingly overlooked likely due to their close friendship; Rohm being one of the few Hitler allowed to call him Adolf, and supposedly Ady (nickname).

Hakenkreuz (hooked cross)
|hawk-ken-crewtz|

A

The appropriated swastika symbol that Nazi’s took and tilted 45 degrees to make it their own. Hakenkreuz means “hooked cross”, there’s also Winkelkreuz “angled cross” and krummkreuz”crooked cross. This symbol is called a swastika, but it shouldn’t as a true swastika originates from Sanskrit and means peace and well being, while the Hakenkreuz symbolizes hate, racism, and violence.

Q

Schutzstaffel (SS)

A

Established by Hitler in 1925 to be his personal bodyguards, the SS would eventually go on to police the Third Reich. The SS were a sub-division of the SA and members were chosen based on ‘racial purity’ blind obedience and fanatical loyalty to Hitler. The SS saw themselves as the ultimate defenders of the ‘Aryan’ race and Nazi ideology, aiming to destroy any who threatened this.
