A sovereign state in Central Europe established after WW1, existing from 1918 to 1992 between the Czech and Slovak lands. Its democratic traditions allowed it to peacefully split into two independent nations, the Czech Republic and Slovakia in 1993. A process referred to as the Velvet Divorce, marked by a lack of violence or conflict.
