Nazi Germany : Rise of Hitler Flashcards
Give one reason why German political circumstances in the 1920s led to the rise of the Nazis?
One reason was the structural weakness of the the Weimar Government. The Weimar Government was built on proportional representation where parties gained seats by the number of votes they won. This in turn created unstable coalition government. They were small competing parties, which had a difficult time agreeing on laws and policies. This made it difficult for any action to be taken by the Weimar Government and were seen as weak by the German people. Therefore. , Germans lost faith in the efficiency of the Weimar Government and turned to alternatives such as the Nazi Party, giving the Nazi Party an opportunity
to win supporters with their ideology. They promised the people a stronger and cohesive government. Thus the structural weaknesses of the Weimar Government led to rise of Nazis.
Give another reason why German political circumstances in the 1920s led to the rise of the Nazis.
Another was the political instability caused by opposition from the Left and Right to the Weimar Government. From 1919 to 1923, left and right wing extremists tried to seize power from the government using violent means. For example, the Spartacist rebellion was carried out by people who believe in communism in 1919 and the Kapp Putsch in 1920 by Freikorps soldiers. Therefore, the Weimar Government’s inability to solve the resulting political chaos caused the Germans to lose faith in the government. The Nazi Party took this as an opportunity to win over support by representing themselves as a strong and united party, capable of restoring stability to the nation using the SA. Thus the Germans started pouring their support to the Nazis, leading to the rise o Nazis.
