How did Nazi Germany control teachers?
- Had to join the NSLB and attend training
- Anti-Nazi and ‘undesirable’ teachers fired
- Worked at youth groups in the evenings and on Saturday
How was Nazi ideology worked into the curriculum of schools?
- Eugenics, taught of racial superiority and arayanism
- History focused on German war victories
- Mathematics had questions of German economic savings by getting rid of ‘burdens’ in society
- Girls taught how to be wives, move away from religion
What were some of the Nazis aims for children?
- Be fit, idolize the Fuhrer, sacrifice self for the nation
- Girls were to bear many children
- Boys were to be strong fighters/soldiers
What was the Hitler Youth and how did this attempt to control children?
- 1934, 3.5 million members, compulsory by 1939
- Taught things like sports, teamwork, useful skills and Nazi ideology
- Praised weapons and warfare, military drills & lessons
- Members swore an oath to Hitler
What limitations were there in controlling youth and education?
- Did not intervene greatly with universities
- Many only attended for fun, didn’t enjoy military side
- Membership dropped after the age of 14, people became more defiant with time
- Ideology went over the head of children
What was film like in Nazi Germany?
- Showed Hitler as sacrificing himself for Germany
- Anti-Semitic films, e.g. ‘The Eternal Jew’
- Leni Riefenstahl, produced recordings of rallies and the 1936 Berlin Olympics
- All films approved by Goebbels, only 1/6 of all films made were propaganda
What was literature like in Nazi Germany and how was it controlled?
- Favored novels glorifying war and peasant values
- May 1933, 30,000 books were burned in Berlin that did not fit Nazi ideas
What did art depict in Nazi Germany?
- Degenerate artists removed, return to classical styles
- Promoted arayanism and heroic Germans, photos showed Hitler as a man of the people
What was architecture like in Nazi Germany?
- Neo-classical style, buildings were supposed to represent the idea of a 1000 year Reich
- Statutes depicted the ideal German
- Weimar style remained for practical buildings, e.g. airports
- Albert Speer lost the favour of Hitler
What was theatre like in Nazi Germany?
- Tended to glorify Germanys pagan past
- Weimar plays were ended and closed down, theatre had to be officially approved
What was music like in Nazi Germany?
- Folk operas about heroes, classical music
- Controlled by the Reich Chamber of Music
- Jazz music banned, US influence cut
- Radio was used to broadcast speeches, people expected to stop and listen
