NAVOSH II Flashcards
Define Heat Stress
Any combination of air temperature, thermal radiation, humidity, airflow and work load which can stress the body to regulate temperature
List the factors that cause heat stress
- Thermal
- Humidity
- Air/Sea
- Ventilation
Examples of thermal radiation
sun Heat sources( incinerators/ Engines/ Generators/ laundry/dryers)
Examples of Ventilation
Forced air flow systems
Forced exhaust systems
Examples of Humidity
Steam leaks
Bilge water
Condensation
Examples of the water/ sea water temp
Refer units
engines
generators
evaporators for fresh waters
Define Acclimation
The act of becoming accustomed to temperature or new environment/ Usually 3 weeks or more
List some personal factors that contribute to HEAT stress
Past exposure/ injurie's Current Health status Exercise and fluid intake Medication Alcohol intake Lack of sleep Drugs
What are come common locations for Heat stress conditions on a ship
Machinery spaces Laundry Sculleries(Phel V) Incinerator room Flight decks
What are some contributing factors that lead to heat stress on the ship
Steam and water leaks
Ventilation Deficiencies
Arduous Operations
What is the PHEL
Physiological Heat Exposure Limit
The PHEL has how many curves, and who creates it
6
Industrial Hygienist and NAVSEA
What are the PHEL curve categories
Routine Operations
NON routine Operations
ECC exercises (Evacuation control center drills)
Heavy Duty Work Load

Heavy work loads are always what PHEL curve?
VI
Explain Stay time
Maximum allowable time personnel may work in a heat stress condition at any given work load
What is recovery time
it is the minimum of twice the stay time as determined by PHEL and 4 hours whichever is shorter
What are stack gases
gases which may accumulate in a space due to inadequate ventilation or machinery malfunction
Who must conduct Heat stress training and at what interval?
The MDR and Annually and during Indoc
Heat stress training must include what at a Minimum (5)
- Hazards
- Sx’s of exposure
- Heat stress first aid
- Heat stress monitoring
- Cause of heat stress
Heat stress monitors must complete what trainings? and in what time period?
Watch station 318 PQS
NAVEDTRA 43704
12 weeks (3mo)
How are Heat stress injuries reported?
Accident and injury report
What is the WESS and what is it used to submit?
Web Enabled Safety System
A&I reports
All Heat stress injuries must be reported through what?
Naval Disease Reporting System (NDRS)
What do you do when you do not have access to the NDRS
Submit a Medical Event Report
The SMDR does what in relation to Heat stress surveys?
review all heat stress reports for inaccuracies and QA and make recommendations on crew health
The supervisor or EOOW do what with heat stress surveys?
note any existing problems and corrective actions implemented
Heat stress surveys with reduced stay time must be routed through who? to alter them
the CO
THE SMDR retains all reports for how long?
1 YEAR
What does the DB thermometer do?
Measures ambient air temperature at work sites where heat stress conditions can occur
Dry bulbs but be within what accuracy window to be accurate?
5 degrees of the WBGT
what do you do if the DB is not within the 5degree window?
reposition to ensure its reading accurately if still wrong change it out
the DB must be read when?
every 4 hours for manned spaces not exceed 85
THE DB is read hourly when?
Heat casualties and if it exceeds 85 degrees
When do you circle the temperate in red?
100 or higher
What are two types of heat stress meters?
RSS-220
Questtemp 48N
What can the heat stress meters measure?
Dry Bulb Sensor (ambient Temp)
Wet Bulb (Humidity)
Globe (radiant temp) heat loss ETC
what is the WBGT index?
average of DB/WB and globe temp together
equation of WBGT index?
(0.1xDB)+(0.7xWB)+(0.2xGT)
When are you required to monitor heat stress?
Work length 4hr or less and DB is equal to 100 (PHEL I-III)
Work Length is greater than 4hrs and DB =90 (PHEL I-III)
equal to or greater than 85(PHEL IV-VI)
When do you do follow on survey?
DB temp is more than 5 Degree from hanging DB in previous survey
For the RSS-220 what is the start up and subsequent reading times?
5 mins
3 minutes
At what height and distance from chest do you hold the RSS-220
Chest Height and 1 ft
What is the start up and subsequent testing time for the QUESTemp 48N
10 minutes
5 minutes
At what height and distance from the chest do you hold the QUESTemp?
Chest height
18’’ from the body
What is the AHSS ?and how many WBGT must be on ship equipped with it?
Automated Heat Stress System
Two portable WBGT
