Navigation Displays Flashcards
Purpose of heads up display(HUD)
To display essential flight information in the line of sight of the pilot
Describe FOV
The porthole the pilot looks through
Problem with limited field of view
If a target was outside the field of view, the pilot would have to steer the aircraft towards the target
Describe diffractive optics
Diffractive optics allow the spreading of light through a combiner
Advantages of diffractive over refractive
-Increased fov
-Requires less light to achieve equal or better brightness
-lower power CRT
- allows FLIR and radar imagery to be displayed
Describe cursive writing
The electron beam draws the symbols the same way as pencil on paper.
Describe Raster scan
The ‘spot is moved over the whole area of the screen in a series of parallel horizontal lines, left to right, top to bottom and an image is built up by varying the brightness of the spot during the scan.

Heading
Advantages of EHSI over HSI
Display is software driven, allows same display to be fitted to numerous a/c
Removes need for pilot to scan the instrument panel
Advantages of flat panel over CRT
Smaller
cheaper
less power
More reliable
3 types of flat panel displays used in avionics systems
LED light emitting diode
LCD liquid crystal display
AMLCD active matrix lcd
What are soft keys and hard keys
Soft keys are software driven so are programmable and allow various functions
Hard keys have fixed functions
Explain BITE with in MFD
Software designed to test a system and is a main aid in fault dining
