Navigation Flashcards
What is QNH?
Height AMSL.
What is QFE?
Height above airfield. (To touchdown zone).
What is height?
Vertical distance from a given datum.
What is Altitude?
Height AMSL.
What is Elevation?
Height of something from AMSL. e.g. Mountains.
How is QNH measured?
Pressure at airfield adjusted to read ground elevation.
Who uses QFE?
British military.
Who uses QNH?
Flights in vicinity of civil aerodromes. For calculating TL. For Calculating minimum safe flight level.
What is the standard pressure change with height?
1 hpa per 30 ft (27.3 ft…)
What pressure setting do you use for Flight Levels?
Standard Altimeter Setting (SAS) 1013 hpa.
What is RPS?
Regional Pressure Setting.
How is RPS calculated?
Lowest forecast QNH within a desginated Altimeter Setting Region (ASR).
How often is the RPS issued?
Every hour.
Which ASR is CRN and BKH in?
Barnsley.
When do we use the SAS?
All flying above TA. Flying above 3000ft in the UK outside Controlled Airspace.
How is Safety Altitude Calculated?
5nm either side of track (30nm for EFT). Highest point -> rounded up (to the nearest hundred) -> plus 1000ft (if terrain = 3000ft+ plus 2000ft).
What is SAlt?
Provides aircrew with a safe altitude at which to fly when visual separation from the ground is not possible.
At what height is the Minimum FL?
At least 1000ft above Transition Altitude (TA).
How do you calculate Pressure Altitude of an Airfield?
Airfield Elevation + (30 x p). 30 = hPa to ft p = (1013 -Aerodrome QNH).
What is the Navigation Work Cycle?
Pre-turn checks. Post-turn checks. Fix point activity.
Which checks do we use for Navigation?
Pre-HAAT
Post-HAAT
FIREASH - for entry/descent into LL Nav Routes
What actions should you take when you are uncertain of your position?
Admit it. Carry out a gross error check. Locate large unique ground feature. Consider use of EFIS “Nearest function”. Climb to improve field of view. Consider Training fix. Monitor fuel.
