Define nausea and vomiting
nausea is the queasy feeling a person gets before being sick or throwing up
vomiting is the body’s way of getting rid of stomach contents it feels may be causing harm
symptoms of nausea and vomiting
feeling sick being sick pale in colour (pallor) headache finding it difficult to eat
Referral criteria for nausea and vomiting and red flag symptoms
-Pregnant/breastfeeding
-diarrhoea? What food have they eaten as it could be gastroenteritis?
-migraine/head injury
-dehydration
-appendicitis
Red flag symptoms:
-duration of more than 48 hours in adults
-refer if child is under 2 years old
-blood in vomit or stools
Lifestyle advice for nausea and vomiting
Keep hydrated - danger of dehydration in young and elderly
Try eating small amount of food, snacks which are high in sugar

Dioralyte (ORS)
Pepto-bismol liquid
Buccastem (propchloperzine)
How do you use dioralyte?
empty sachet into 200mL water
Adults: 1 or 2 sachets/day
Child: 1 sachet
Babies under 2: according to weight
Dioralyte warnings and counselling
Do not take if allergic or bowel is blocked
Counselling:
can affect salt diet
has glucose
Pepto-Bismol liquid suspension
Active product
Bismuth subsalicylate - coats lining of stomach to prevent irritation and lessen nausea

Directions for use
Up to 8 doses in 24 hours
16+ dose: 30mL and repeat every 30-60 minutes if needed
