Nausea and Vomiting Flashcards
What are the indications of cinnarizine?
Vertigo/menieres disease, nausea and vomiting, motion sickness and vestibular symptoms of other origins
What are some targets of cinnarizine?
Histamine H1 receptor antagonist
Volatage-dependant L-type calcium antagonist
Volatge-dependant T-type calcium antagonist
What is dimenhydranite?
An anti emetics drug combination that contains dimenhhydramine and theophylline
What is dimenhydrinate used for?
Prevention and treatment of nausea, vomiting or vertigo of motion sickness
Is dimenhydrinate effective in the treatment of nausea associated with cancer chemotherapy?
No
What is the mechanism of action of dimenhydrinate?
Competitive antagonist at histamine H1 receptor
What are some adverse effects of cinnarizine and dimenhydrinate?
drowsiness/somnolence, fatigue, parkinsonism, headache, abdominal pain, nausea and tremors
What are some symptoms of overdose of cinnarizine and dimenhydrinate?
Delirium, hallucinations, excitement. Patients may be violent and confused
What is dronabinol?
A synthetic form of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol which is the primary psychoactive component of cannabis
What are the indications for dronabinol?
For anorexia associated weight loss in patients with AIDS, nausea and vomiting associated with cancer chemotherapy in patients who have failed to respond to conventional antiemetic treatments
What is the MOA of dronabinol?
Weak partial agonist activity at the CB1R and CB2R receptors which results in the well-known effects of smoking cannabis
Inhibits endorphins in the emetic center, suppress prostaglandin synthesis, and/or inhibit activity through an unspecified cortical action
