Nature vs Nuture Flashcards
What is the nature vs nuture debate?
Is behaviour determined by genetic inhertiance or environmental experiences.
John Locke’s view on nature vs nuture
- Argues for nuture.
- John Locke (1632-1704): ‘tabula rasa’ -> at birth, our minds are a blank slate.
Cognitive approach’s perspective on the nature vs nurture debate
- Interactionalist approach.
- Innate information processing abilites are constantly refined by experience.
Heritability Coefficent
- Extent to which characterstics have a genetic basis (higher vaule -> more biological trait).
- Scientific way of measuring the extent.
Tienari et al. (2004)
Adoptees with dsyfunctional adoptive families and the same genetics for schizophera from their blood relatives, displayed characterstics of schizophera.
What does the diathesis-stress model say?
Stressers in the environment can trigger mental illnesses howver you need to be genetically dispaposed.
What are epigenetics?
- Agrues that nature, nuture and epigenetics make up human behaviour.
- Genetic codes can be dominant or active when exposed to your environment. They don’t change.
- Memories can be encoded into genes and passed down to new generations.
What are biopsychologist’s view on the nature vs nuture debate?
Biopsychologists recognise the influence of the environment on our biology. E.g. epigenetics, diathesis-stress model.
