What is cultural relativism?
The idea that norms and vaules as well as ethics and moral standards can only be meaningful and understood within specfic social and cultural context.
How is gender bias reflected in psychology today?
- Nowadays known symptoms of mental illnesses have come from studies on male particpants.
- This means that symptoms for female particpants can be unknown.
- This means female are often misdiagnosed or underdiagnosed, which is commonly seen with autism.
Gender bias in psychology throughout history
It has been historically a field dominated by men: many of the psychologists as well as participants because educated has always been more accessible to men in the past.
What is androcentrism?
- Because female behaviours are different, they are seen as ‘abnormal’, ‘inferior’ or ‘deficient’.
- It is the consquences of beta bias.
What is beta bias?
Men particpate in the study but generalised to both genders.
What is alpha bias?
Exaggerates/ overestimates the differences between sexes. More likely to devaule females.
e.g. freud believes that women have underdeveloped superegos because the electra compllex never gets fully resolved.
What is gender bias?
Psychological research or theory that may offer a view that does not justifiably represent the experience of both men and women.
