What is ethnocentrism?
- Judging other cultures by the standing and vaules of one’s own culture.
- Underpines predjuce
What is WERID?
- WERID (western, educated, rich, industrialised, democratic).
- Most studies are done on and by people in this demographic, meaning that the research will be biased to WERID culture.
What is imposed etic?
- When emic research results are applied universially.
- This is an error and why you need to be mindful of cultural relativism.
What is the emic approach?
Function from within certain cultures and identify behaviours specific to that culture.
What is the etic approach?
Look at behaviour from outside a given culture and attempt to describe those behaviours that are universial.

Strange Situation Study
Strange Situation Study (Ainsworth (1970))
* Labelled attachment with moderate distress when left alone as ‘secure’ attachment.
* This was the attachment style that most babies were raised in western culture.
* When this was replicated in other countries were the attachment labels were kept despite clear cultural differences affecting attachment.
* This devaules parenting styles in other cultures.
Kilham and Mann (1974) Study
Their study revealed different results when studided in other places in the world.
