Nature vs. Nurture Flashcards
genetic predisposition
A genetic predisposition is a genetic characteristic which influences the possible phenotypic development of an individual organism within a species or population under the influence of environmental conditions
chromosomes
The threadlike structures made of DNA molecules that contain the genes. A human cell has twenty-three pairs of chromosomes, one member of each pair coming from each parent. It is these cells that are so important in determining who we are from a genetic standpoint. But don’t forget, our genetic makeup is only one part of the equation. Who we are is a combination of our genetic makeup and our experiences (our environment)
chromosomes to make male/female
females have two of the same kind of sex chromosomes XX
males have two distinct sex chromosomes XY
gender identity
Gender identity refers to “one’s sense of oneself as male, female, or transgender”. When one’s gender identity and biological sex are not congruent, the individual may identify as transsexual or as another transgender category
temperament
temperament refers to those aspects of an individual’s personality, such as introversion or extroversion, that are often regarded as innate rather than learned
nature vs nurture concept
Nature is what we think of as pre-wiring and is influenced by genetic inheritance and other biological factors. Nurture is generally taken as the influence of external factors after conception e.g. the product of exposure, experience and learning on an individual. The nature-nurture debate is concerned with the relative contribution that both influences make to human behavior
