Nature Vs Nurture Flashcards
Interactionist approach- nature vs nurture
Behaviour/characteristics influenced by nature (genes) or nurture (environment)? Any can arise from both
Bowlby- attachment type determined by warmth and parental love (environment)
Kagan-babies innate personality (nature) change’s parents response (nurture)
How do they interact
Diathesis stress model
Bio or environ vulnerability- expressed when paired with trigger (stressor)
May not develop until triggered
Epigenics
Change in genetic activity w/o changing genes themself- throughout life
Caused by interaction with environment- leaves a mark on our DNA
May influence genetic code
Nature
Inherited influence
Descartes- all human characteristics are innate
Psychological characteristics determined by genes
Nurture
Influence of experience and environment
Locke- mind is a blank slate
Measuring nature and nurture
Degree to which 2 ppl are similar on a trait represented by a correlation coefficient-concordance
Provides extent to which trait is inherited
1.0 (100%) means genes are solely responsible: 0.01(1%) genes have no contribution
Strengths- adoption
Adoption studies-seperate competing influences of nature and nurture
Similar to biological-genetics bigger influence:
to adopted- environment more effective
Limitations- misguided
May be misguided- Plomin- people select own nurture to fit their nature
Naturally aggressive child will be more comfortable with those similar
Companions influence their behaviour further
Strengths- support for epigenics
Environmental effects span generations - effects offspring
When nazis blocked food for Dutch. Susser and Lin- women had lower weight babies. These were 2x more likely to develop schizophrenia
Strengths-real world application-OCD
Highly heritable
Nestadt- heritability rate at 0.7- doesn’t mean it is inevitable
Those at a higher risk can receive advice and how to prevent
