Nature Vs Nurture Flashcards
Behaviourist approach
Nurture
—> consequence of interaction with environment
—> consequence of behaviour within the environment
SLT
Primarily nurture
—> learning as result of observing others
—> HOWEVER: capacity to learn from observation might be innate
Cognitive approach
Both nature and nurture
—> thought processes may be product of innate factors or experiences
—> we share the same means of information processing (nature)
—> problems could occur because if irrational thoughts and beliefs as a result of experience (nurture)
Biological approach
Primarily nature
—> bio systems (CNS or endocrine system) are product of innate factors
—> HOWEVER; experience may modify these systems
Psychodynamic approach
Both nature and nurture
—> focus on nature side of behaviour in unconscious forces (eg demands of id) and common conflicts
—> HOWEVER: our way of dealing with these is product of upbringing
Humanistic approach
Both nature and nurture
—> assumptions about human nature, eg drive to self-actualise (nature)
—> HOWEVER: problems in achieving it come from experience and upbringing, eg experience of conditional positive regard and conditions of worth (nurture)
