Determinism Vs Free Will Flashcards
Behaviourist approach
Soft determinism
—> behaviour determined by consequence of behaviour which determines the likelihood of that behaviour reoccurring
—> Skinner: emphasis on external factors (reward and punishment)
SLT
Soft determinism
—> vicarious learning
—> behaviour as product of experience
—> HOWEVER application of behaviour is up to free will
Cognitive approach
Soft determinism
—> our own thought processes determine behaviour
—> some degree of control
Biological approach
Hard determinism
—> physiological (neurochemical or hormonal) factors
—> inherited (genetic) factors
—> both outside our control
Psychodynamic approach
Hard determinism
—> unconscious factors
—> largely unknown to us
—> out of our control
Humanistic approach
Full free will
—> choice in behaviour
