Nature's Chemistry Flashcards
What is a hydrocarbon?
A hydrocarbon is a compound consistent of carbon and hydrogen only.
By what process are hydrocarbons extracted?
Fractional distillation.
How does fractional distillation separate hydrocarbons?
According to their boiling points.
What is a homologous series?
A homologous series is a group of compounds with:
- the same general formula
- similar chemical properties
What is the raw material used to extract hydrocarbons?
Crude Oil.
What is the general formula of the alkanes?
CnH2n+2
What do alkane names end in?
-ane
What type of bonding is present in alkanes?
C-C single bonds.
Are alkanes saturated or unsaturated?
Saturated.
Would an alkane decolourise bromine solution?
No, because they are SATURATED.
What is a use of branched chain alkanes?
• Used as a fuel.
What is the general formula of the cycloalkanes?
CnH2n
What do all cycloalkanes start and end with?
‘cyclo-‘ and ‘-ane’
What type of bonding is present in cycloalkanes?
C-C single bonds.
What is a use of cycloalkanes?
• Used as a fuel.
