Nature of science Flashcards
What are the characteristics of life?
Cellular organization, the ability to reproduce, growth & development, energy use, homeostasis
What is the smallest Hierarchy of life?
Cell
what is the Hierarchy of life?
atom, molecule, macromolecule, organelle, cell, tissue, organ, organ system, organisms, population, community, ecosystem, biome, biosphere
What is positive feedback?
When a variable triggers a response
What is an example of positive feedback?
Childbirth
What is negative feedback?
Reverses the initial change
What is an example of negative feedback?
Body responds to hot and cold
What is an effector?
Receives information and acts to bring about the changes needed to maintain homeostasis.
What is a receptor?
The sensing component responds to changes in the environment.
What is the control center?
The hypothalamus. The bottom middle of the brain controls everything.
What is an independent variable?
When you manipulate and control in an experiment.
What is the dependent variable?
Changes as a result of the independent variable.
What is the controlled variable?
Any variable that is held constant.
