Nature and variety of life Flashcards
Name the characteristics of MRS H GREN
Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Homeostasis, Growth, Reproduction, Excretion, Nutrition
What is the difference between a eukaryote and a prokaryote?
Eukaryote- have a nucleus, bigger cells
Prokaryote- don’t have nucleus, smaller cells
What are the characteristics of the plant kingdom?
Eukaryotic, Multicellular, cell walls (cellulose), cell membrane, chloroplasts (can photosynthesize), store carbohydrates as starch or sucrose
What are the characteristics of the animal kingdom?
Eukaryotic, Multicellular, no chloroplasts, no cell wall, cannot photosynthesize, they have nervous coordination, can move from one place to another, they often store carbohydrates as glycogen
What are the characteristics of the fungi kingdom?
Eukaryotic, Can be unicellular or multicellular, unable to carry out photosynthesis, cell wall (chitin), their body is usually organised into a mycelium made from strands called hyphae, they store carbohydrates as glycogen, they’re saprotrophic feeders
What are the characteristics of the protoctista kingdom?
Eukaryotic, Microscopic unicellular organisms, some have cell structure like animals and some like plants, can be pathogenic
What are the characteristics of the bacteria kingdom?
Prokaryotic, Microscopic unicellular organisms, cell wall, cell membrane, cytoplasm and plasmids, they contain a circular chromosome of DNA in place of the nucleus. Some bacteria can carry out photosynthesis but most feed off living or dead organisms. Can be pathogenic
What are the characteristics of Viruses?
Non living organisms, small particles (smaller than bacteria), they are parasitic, can only reproduce inside living cells, they can infect every type of living organism, they have a wide variety of shape and sizes , they have a protein coat and contain one type of nucleic acid, either RNA or DNA
