Hormones Flashcards
Role of Insulin
Regulate blood sugar levels
Source of Insulin
Pancreas
Effect of Insulin
stimulates the liver and muscles to turn glucose into glycogen
Role of Adrenaline
Readies the body for flight or flight response
Source of Adrenaline
Adrenal Gland (above the kidneys)
Effect of adrenaline
Increase of heart rate and breathing rate, increases sugar level in blood and redirects blood flow to muscles and heart (away from digestive system)
Role of Testosterone
Main male sex hormone
source of Testosterone
Testes
Effect of Testosterone
Promotes Male secondary sexual characteristics
Role of Progesterone
Control of menstrual cycle and Support Pregnancy
source of progesterone
Ovaries
Effect of Progesterone
Maintains lining of uterus
Role of Oestrogen
Main Female sexual hormone
Source of Oestrogen
Ovaries
Effect of Oestrogen
Controls menstrual cycle (inhibits FSH production and causes uterus lining to thicken) and promotes Female secondary sexual characteristics
Do roots have a negative or positive geotropic response, explain why?
Positive, because they grown down (with gravity), to ensure the plant is anchored in the soil
Do shoots have a negative or positive geotropic response, explain why?
Negative, they grow upwards (away from gravity), to ensure the leaves are exposed to light
Do shoots have have a negative or positive phototropic response, explain why?
Positive, they grow towards the light, to maximise the exposure of leaves to Iight for photosynthesis
What is a hormone?
Chemical messenger, controls a response in a particular tissue or organ
What is the name of a structure which produces and releases a hormone?
(endocrine) gland
How are hormones transported to their target hormones?
in the blood
What hormone is released in the growing tips of plants, and brings about tropic responses?
auxin
Where does auxin accumulate in a shoot?
shaded side of the shoot
What effect does auxin have on the cells in a shoot?
causes more rapid cell elongation on shaded side, so shoot bends towards the light
