Nature and Nuture Flashcards
Define the nature approach
the idea that our behaviour is the result of biological forces such as genes and evolution.
what does the nature approach argue
behaviour is the product of innate biological genetic factors
define the nuture approach
the idea that our behaviour is the results of the environment and that we learn through our experiences and interaction with stimuli
what does the nurture approach argue
behaviour is the product of environmental influences
what is heredity
the process in which traits are passed down from one generation to the next
TRUE OR FALSE: monozygotic twins share 100% of their DNA
TRUE
therefore if one twin has a disorder and the other has it the disorder is genetic
Do Dizygotic twins share:
a. 75%
b. 50%
c. 100%
of their DNA with eachother
B. 50%
Who will have higher concordance rates if the disorder is genetic
Mz twins or Dz twins
Mz Twins
how does the environment determine behaviour
this idea would suggest that our behaviour is learnt from our environment which includes people, events and physical world
what is interactionist approach
nature and nuture interacts as your innate behaviours are influenced by experience
examples of interactionist approach
diathesis stress model
epigenetics
PKU (phenylketonuria)
what is the diathesis stress model
it suggests that a combination of nature and nurture cause the disorder. it suggests that an individual may have a genetic predisposition (chance) of inheriting a disorder however, an environmental stressor or trigger will cause the onset of the disorder.
what is epigenetics
the physical experience you have, scars your DNA, altering its genetic expression
what is PKU
a genetic condition that is passed down that can be prevented by having a low protein prevents effects of condition (mental retardation)
how can nature and nuture debate be applied to psychopathology
in explanations of phobias it claims theyre larnt from the environment through operant and classical conditioning. this shows the nuture side of the debate as it suggests that behaviour is learnt rather than we are born with it. However innate phobias such as those with real danger would support the nature side of the debate.
this questions the actual cause of phobias
