Free will and Determinism Flashcards
what is free will
you make your own choices and are in control of your own behaviour
what is determinism
your behaviour is product of forces beyond your control
TRUE OR FALSE: determinism suggests we are not governed by internal or external forces
FALSE
determinism suggests we are governed by internal or external forces
TRUE or FALSE: determinism suggests that there is no cause and effect relationship between behaviours
FALSE
there is a cause and effect relationship between behaviours and that free will does not play a role
what are the two types of determinism
hard determinism
soft determinism
what is soft determinism
suggests that whilst biology may determine behaviour or social factors, there is still an element of choice in your behaviour
what is hard determinism
there is no free will with traits and behaviours entirely outside the individuals control
what are the different types of hard determinism
biological determinism
environmental determinism
psychic determinism
how does humanism and free will link
humanism suggests that self determination is a necessary part of human behaviour, change of an individual can only happen when they’re free from controlling constraints.
arguements for determinism
- to say theres a cause of behaviour, make s it more scientific as experiments change one IV and measure its effect
- understanding a single cause of behaviour can help us develop treatments e.g SSRIs used to treat depression
arguments against determinism
- some therapies rely on there being an element of free will e.g CBT - change interpretation
- e.g rogers need free will to achieve unconditioned positive regard
- elements of society dont work without free will e.g the criminal justice system
