Q

Explain the use of water as a symbol in Mysteries of Heroism

A

Water represents life. Collins risks his life to get water then gives it to a dying soldier which is pointless. Crane is trying to say war is pointless. Also, Collins’ Lieutenants spill the water carelessly which points out how careless leaders are with the lives of those in war.

Q

Explain how TBAF is one of the truest Naturalist stories ever.

A

In TBAF, London shows that nature is not out to get the man but it is essentially unconcerned with his existence. For instance, if the man had not been there it would’ve been just as cold and, the dog is also unconcerned with him. When he falls into the snow it is seen as chance or fate. The man dies not because nature is out to get him but simply because he’s unprepared for the weather.
