Natural Systems Flashcards
What are the 5 components of a system?
Inputs Outputs Stores Flows Boundaries
Define inputs
When matter/energy enters system
Define outputs
When matter/energy leaves system
Define stores
Where matter/energy builds up
Define flows
When matter/energy moves from one store to another
Define boundaries
Limits of a system
What are the characteristics of open systems?
•Energy/matter can leave/enter
What are the characteristics of a closed system?
- Matter can’t enter/leave, only flow between stores
* Energy can enter/leave
What is positive feedback in a system?
• Change in inputs/outputs is amplified - system increases effect of change
What is negative feedback in a system?
Change in inputs/outputs is nullified - system decreases effects of change
What are the 5 subsystems on Earth?
Cryosphere, Lithosphere, Biosphere, Hydrosphere, Atmosphere
What is the cryosphere?
Includes all parts of Earth where it’s cold enough for water to freeze
What is the lithosphere?
Outer part of Earth from bottom up - includes crust and upper mantle
What is the biosphere?
Where living organisms are found
What is the hydrosphere?
Includes all water on Earth - can be in solid, liquid or gas form and saline or freshwater
