natural selection Flashcards
what is evolution
the process of species gradually developing
what is the main evidence there is for evolution
fossils
what is a fossil
it is a trace of plants or animals that have been preserved
how do organisms evolve
through natural selection
what is natural selection
when species slowly evolve to become better adapted to its environment
how did peppered moths change during natural selection
Originally, most peppered moths had light-coloured wings, which helped them camouflage with the tree bark. However, as industrial pollution darkened tree trunks with soot, dark-coloured moths gained a survival advantage because they were better camouflaged from predators. Over time, the frequency of the dark-coloured moths increased.
what is the 1st step to natural selection
species show variation in their genes
what is the 2nd step in natural selection
the organisms with the best characteristics adapted to the environment will survive. less well adapted organisms will die. this is knows as survival of the fittest
what is the 3rd step to natural selection
the genes from the surviving organisms are passed onto their off spring, which they then inherit the features
what is the final step to natural selection
this process is repeated multiple times (natural selection and survival of the fittest) and may lead to a development of a new species
