extinction Flashcards
what is extinction
when there are no more of a species left, due to them not surviving and reproducing enough
how do we know a species has gone extinct
from fossils
how do organisms go extinct
-change of environment
-destruction of habitat
-diseases
-predators
what happens when a species becomes extinct
biodiversity is reduced (range of organisms living in an area)
what does endangered mean
when there are very few of the species and are close to being extinct
what are some ways scientist try to prevent extinction
-maintaining biodiversity
-breeding in zoos
-setting up nature reserves
-gene banks
what is a gene bank
they store genetic material from a species that are used for research or produce an endangered species if it ever becomes extinct
what are seed banks
stores dried plant seeds at low temperatures
what are tissue banks
stores buds and other plant cells from plants
what are cryobanks
stores seed, pollen, embryos, and sperm and egg cells at very low temperatures
