What is the first step of mechanical digestion?
Ingestion.
Which organ helps move the food bolus to the pharynx?
The tongue.
What structure helps food move from the mouth to the stomach?
The esophagus.
Which organ prevents food from entering the windpipe?
The epiglottis.
Which organ contains acid and digestive juices to break down food?
The stomach.
What happens to food in the stomach during digestion?
It turns into a liquid called chyme.
Which organ absorbs most of the nutrients into the blood?
The small intestine.
What does bile help break down in the small intestine?
Fats.
What part of the digestive system absorbs remaining water and minerals?
The large intestine.
Where does undigested waste exit the body?
Through the anus.
What is sweat composed of and what is its function?
Sweat is a mixture of water, salt, and minerals. Its function is to cool us down when it is hot.
Where are sweat glands most commonly found?
Sweat glands produce sweat and are found all over the skin, but are more frequent in armpits, hands, and feet.
What is bile and where is it produced?
Bile is a digestive juice produced by the liver.
What is chyme and where does it go after leaving the stomach?
Chyme is the partly fluid and partly solid mass of incompletely digested food that passes from the stomach into the first part of the small intestine.
What are gastric juices and what do they do?
Gastric juices are the chemicals that break down food in the stomach.
What is the epiglottis and what is its function?
